I'm a parent of 3 that have made their way through the public school system - 2 have special needs and I can tell you from my experience that if you have a high-achieving child they will probably be ok at King, if they can overlook the constant fighting. If you have children with special needs however, it puts a spotlight on the glaring shortcomings of the teachers, communication and results at this school. I have been so frustrated not even being able to get in touch with my child's math teacher when he is failing math.

Toomer is a great community school. It doesn't have as high of an overall score as some other nearby schools because historically a higher percentage of families with privilege in the neighborhood have navigated to other schools that have higher Greatschools.org ratings because that makes them feel more "comfortable", which is one of the many issues with Greatschools.org ratings. If most families in the neighborhood were to buy in to their neighborhood public school, their contributions would help the school thrive even more. It's a chicken and egg scenario.That said, Toomer's test scores and its overall offerings and student experience continue to climb because of the hard work of the staff and community. Toomer has a fantastic parent and neighborhood community of businesses and organizations that support it. Kids love learning at Toomer. Teachers are committed at Toomer. If issues arise, they get resolved because the administration is committed. The IB Programme has grown into a phenomenal way to frame learning and help kids make connections between different subjects and their world. If Toomer was a stock it would be a "buy low" because it is going nowhere but up. Students from other schools are transferring in to be a part of the Toomer community, and I am personally glad we have been a part of this community for the past 4 years and counting.

Maynard Jackson is a really good school definitely would recommend putting your high schooler here!
