As of 2025/26 school year, MES will become K-6 not K-8. MUSD/MES is a revolving door for leadership. During our 5 years here, there have been 5 different principals (Leonard, Rice, Andrist, Crawford, Yazzie). There have been 4 different Superintendents in 5 years. This leads to inconsistency in disciplining known behaviorally aggressive children, and serious communication lapses with parents. Currently, in my experience, Yazzie & Opelt *barely* communicate to parents. Several teachers leave per year due to retirement. We have experienced many MES teachers and they’ve all been wonderful, caring people who genuinely enjoy children and their jobs. Many families expect this school to raise their children for them, and clearly there’s no character formation and academic support happening at home. My kids have dealt with many a behaviorally challenged, disrespectful peer. There’s been a major vaping problem in sixth grade population here, according to my sixth grade neighbor. The leadership and parent communication at the district / principal level is *severely* lacking and frankly unacceptable. Overall, I would recommend this school because of the teachers and office staff. However, don’t expect strict or consistent discipline for student misbehavior / bullying / cussing at school. As a parent, don’t expect consistent leadership, accountability or communication from the principal, school board, or superintendent. Don’t expect your children will be around mostly good character families who take the time to raise their own kids to respect those around them. You won’t find that here.

I am a former student of Mayer High School. I went here during my freshman year, and it was absolutely awful. There is countless discrimination towards those who are of the African-American race from students, bullying is a major problem, a majority of the teachers taught poorly, especially in the science and mathematics departments of this school. Typically, from my experience (last year,) about half of the students are friendly to newcomers and some are not, which does appear typical but I know that people are bound to be picked on and pushed to the last of their wits here.
