Neighborhood Description
Boundaries: College Point is a quiet waterfront neighborhood on Flushing Bay and the East River, offering small-town living and relatively inexpensive homes within easy reach of Manhattan.
Located in northwest Queens in Community District 7, College Point is separated from the rest of the borough by the College Point Corporate Park, north of the Whitestone Expressway.
History: Conrad Poppenhusen, a wealthy local industrialist, selected College Point in the 1850s as the site for a factory making hard rubber products, and quickly converted the area's farm fields into a thriving community. He donated land for a school and a church, built houses for his workers, and provided vocational training for his workers at the Poppenhusen Institute (which still offers a variety of low-cost or free educational, cultural, and social programs).
Today: College Point residents are trying to preserve the small-town quality of their neighborhood, but the area has become a desirable place to locate new residential and commercial construction-450 housing units in 225 mostly two-unit buildings have been built in the past 14 months.
Transportation: Q25 or Q65 to Flushing Main Street subway and then 7 train to Manhattan.
Schools: College Point has two elementary schools, P.S. 129 and P.S. 29. Children can continue their public school education at either J.H.S. 185 or J.H.S. 194 and then at Flushing High School. Children can attend kindergarten through eighth grade at three parochial high schools: the Catholic St. Fidelis School, St. Paul's Episcopal School, and St. John's Lutheran School. The St. Agnes Academic School is a Roman Catholic high school for girls.
Special Note: College Point's community spirit is fostered by an annual Memorial Day parade; summer street fairs along College Point Boulevard; an annual marathon; and concerts and other events at Hermon A. MacNeil Park.
