"I love living here, very close to SF and west oakland bart. Don't look for trouble and it won't find you. Go home at night, and lock your doors, and you'll be safe. Not a lot going on here, no real restaurants, or coffee places. However, you can just go to SF in less than 10 mins. No need to pay SF jacked prices, when West Oakland will do just fine. "
  • Justin Read
"The neighborhood has a mix of rough and tumble, new development, long time residents, and generally a lot going on"
  • Kelly
"Close to public transportation. My husband works in San Francisco and it’s literally just one stop away. Rich culture. My children go Prescott School and we love it! "
  • Drew K.
"Quiet, nice neighborhood filled with lovely Victorian houses and friendly people. Close to everything while retaining distinct small neighborhood charm."
  • Meghan Hannah
"It’s a beautiful neighborhood, of much historic importance. The black panthers originated the nationwide school lunch and breakfast program and were founded in West Oakland."
  • David Ad
"Lovely community with a mix of new and old residents who all look out for each other. Amazing access to transportation options. Mandela Parkway is a joy to walk/run... great place to live."
  • Jen.karen.brooks
"there are rarely any community events held here. some are held by police as a way to do some community outreach through movie nights and meet and greets"
  • Jen.karen.brooks
"the neighborhood is not very dog friendly. there is always broken glass and debris on the sidewalks which make it dangerous for walks"
  • Jen k. b.
"lots of community organized events and other activities along 7th street and west oakland Bart station"
  • Jen k. b.
"Would not recoommend as a place to raise children. Parks have lots of broken glass and homeless people."
  • Karen Y.
"We've lived her for 13 years and we have an eclectic community full of artists, musicians, various ethnic backgrounds, loving families but best of all great neighbors! We love having Mandela Organic Foods, City Slickers Farm, The Crucible Arts Center and Target all so close by."
  • Trulia User
"I've lived here for 1 year and it is not an easy place to live. I don't walk anywhere at night because of street gangs. No where close by to eat or grocery shop. Lots of people giving you looks when you walk around."
  • Amy M.
"There are tree-lined sidewalks, and most of the homes have backyards."
  • Amy M.
"I usually ride my bike, but there is parking available and BART is very close."
  • Amy M.
"The neighborhood features beautiful old Victorian houses. The streets are lined with flowering trees and gardens that make for a quiet neighborhood vibe. It has a rough history, and that is still present in some areas."
  • Cody
"Quickly gentrifying neighborhood that is close to everything. One of the few places left with big homes and broad streets."
  • Bjoubran
"It’s quiet. Industrial. And gentrifying. Close to Bart. Some small food and coffee joints. ..........."
  • Jen k. b.
"diversity of people and land uses. rich cultural history and historic residential and commercial/ industrial buildings. great local coffee shops and close proximity to sf and Berkeley"
