As a parent to a student I am thankful we are zoned for Glen Oakes. The teachers are amazing and the community is amazing. My student loves her school and loves learning.

I’ve been very underwhelmed with this high school. I have 2 children attending there and the way they waste their financial resources aka our tax dollars is unbelievable! There are 6! Yes, 6 principals and tons of other useless and unnecessary staff that make way too much money and take those dollars from the students and their education. I can’t even begin to fathom how a school of only 2800 students needs that many principals and administrators!! What do they do all day?! Also, instead of putting a bigger emphasis on the terrible behavior of some of these students, they micromanage dumb things like hats. They need to be more concerned with the rampant drug use, the vaping and the utter disrespect these students have for their teachers and staff. Also, anywhere in MISD if you’re in a bathroom where someone is vaping, EVERYONE in that bathroom will be forced to go to DAEP, not just the kid(s) who were vaping!! My kids are terrified to even use the restrooms at school because of this. The main principal ONLY focuses on and praises the football team which is atrociously bad, instead of focusing on the other sports that are actually excelling. I hate this school district and I’d recommend RUNNING away from it as fast as you can.

If you are hoping for a school that is diverse, and good for your child if they are just somewhat over weight, don’t come to Dowell. I am a past student from Dowell and the students have never made me feel welcome or anything for be over weight, or black. If you are anything besides white, skinny, or popular, you will be expected to be bullied. 6th grade was the worst year there ever, the teachers never really tried to put an end to there students mean comments, and when they did it was never a “serious” punishment like the teachers would say they tried to do. If you are in the LGBTQ+ you WILL get bullied no questions asked. If you don’t speak much you will get teased, there is no way out of it. Even if your parents are struggling financially you will get bullied, just for not following the most recent trend, for example your backpack, or having an android. The white rich girls there are so hard to deal with, they have never EVER tried to be kind to “unknown” or “broke” kids. Please do not send your kid here if you really want them to be welcomed, This isn’t any shade towards Dowell, it’s just my opinion.
