About this House

Near Cedar and Euclid, just above the Rose Garden. 3 bedrooms/2.5 bathrooms. Furnished with some flexibility.

For over seven decades this gem was the home of one of Berkeley's most distinguished Nobel laureates, Ernest Lawrence, of Lawrence Livermore Labs, and family - with frequent visits by friend and colleague fellow famed physicist Oppenheimer. We modernized the house while painstakingly retaining its original character and thoroughly enjoyed living in this spacious sun-drenched home for many years. You too will enjoy everything this amazing space has to offer, from the domed great room ceiling to the huge rooftop patio; from the decks to the mature greenery of the stately magnolia, cedar and oak trees; from the privacy of sylvan surroundings to twinkling San Francisco city lights; from its interior to its exterior art; from its many outdoor entertaining areas to every spectacular sunset. Watching the fog roll in and out, walking past deer and waking up to the chirping of birds are an everyday affair here. Nestled in the Berkeley hills, in a historic neighborhood established by the visionary Hillside Club, this safe and tranquil spot is close to LBL, Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley and downtown Berkeley. It is located just above Codornices Creek Park, the Berkeley Rose Garden and Tennis Courts on Euclid Avenue and Chez Panisse, with the Cheese Board Collective and the Gourmet Ghetto close by. Tilden and Wildcat Canyon parks are within walking distance. A car is no necessity here. Walk, bike, Uber/Lyft, use the bus to Berkeley downtown BART or take the transbay bus to San Francisco. It's a great school district too!

"It's a very safe neighborhood. Cragmont park and remillard park are great for kids. It's beautiful and hilly so you need to be fit to get around. "
  • Cameron T.
"Dog owners would and do love this neighborhood because there isn’t much traffic, there are many exciting animal smells to sniff—and dog walks are a terrific way to meet nice people quickly and easily."
  • Carmelo S.
"A lot of residents have dogs and they walk them regularly. They congregate at Codornices Park across Berkeley Rose Garden"
  • Annabel
"Easy, I drive to West Berkeley and it’s typically about 12 minutes to get to work. Driving in the Berkeley hills always calls for caution as there are people and children out on the streets where there aren’t always proper sidewalks. "
  • Princess O.
"All the wildlife are present - squirrels, cats, deer, turkey to make your dog want to run and chase them away. Rare sightings of coyote in the neighborhood and mid night sounds of wild cats hunting."
  • Princess O.
"Hills, architecture, parks every where, great city views on walks, a sense of community (which can make people too wary), greenery, lots of dog walking at any hour, nature is so close which is fantastic for bird watching (Cal Falcons, Commodores, etc), deer frolicking all the time, turkey can be seen on their strolls, every house a drive way but most are too small for cars to fit. "
  • Carmelo S.
"Great view of the bay. Beautiful sunsets. Deer just walking around. Close to Lake Anza/Tilden Park. "
  • Urworsenightmare2013
"its quiet calm and very lovely and the scenery is very beautiful, 10 min drive from the lookouts where you can see all the stars"
  • Natalie B.
"It is quiet and we have lots of deer visiting in the evenings. The views are spectacular and it feels very safe."
  • Alastair
"Summer Screen in the park, guided walks with the Berkeley Path Wanderers, concerts and lectures at assorted local venues."
  • Cecilia O. E.
"A car is the preferred way to get around. The bus service is not very frequent and walking is possible, but takes time. "
  • Johnny.fruehe
"Dog owners would love the neighborhood. Only down side might be the traffic. There are many parks for dogs to roam. "
  • Suekagancarson

  • Timothy h.

"Culturally stimulating. Fine dining and entertainment. Walking distance to one of the finest universities in the world. "
  • Kate k.
"Beautiful, safe neighborhood with stunning views and interesting neighbors. Access to all of the cultural amenities and parks in the Bay Area."
  • jkorchin
"Haven't lived in this neighborhood in years, but often go back for friends and family and am always pleased to visit the area. It's green; the architecture is varied by virtue of the topography; stunning views of the City abound and are perfectly centered as this neighborhood is almost due east of the Golden Gate Bridge, which also plays a big role in the neighborhood's wonderful microclimate."
