As someone with a background in education, I feel compelled to speak out about the troubling practices I’ve witnessed within the Florence Unified School District. While I want to begin by acknowledging the dedication of the office administrators, support staff, and assistants—whose efforts are truly commendable—the same cannot be said for certain teachers and IEP team members.The disrespect shown toward engaged, supportive parents is appalling. As educators, we are taught that collaboration with families is essential to student success. Yet here, the norm seems to be a culture of avoidance and deflection. When a student—possibly my own—requires additional support but still meets the district’s minimal standards, the response I’ve received is essentially: “They’re meeting the bar, so we won’t do more.”Let me be clear: when that bar is already set disturbingly low, this kind of reasoning is not only negligent—it’s a disgrace. Florence Unified School District has one of the lowest graduation and academic success rates in the state, and this failure to proactively support students only reinforces that pattern.After nearly two decades of working with school districts, I have never encountered such a blatant dismissal of parental concerns and student needs. To suggest that, upon turning 18, students are solely responsible for their education—despite ongoing parental support—is a gross oversimplification and an abandonment of educational responsibility.This district sends a clear message: if your child doesn’t fall below the lowest thresholds, we won’t help them thrive. That is not education. That is maintenance—and barely that.To any family considering Florence Unified School District: do not choose this district if you want your child to be challenged, supported, or truly prepared for life after graduation. The numbers don’t lie, and neither do the lived experiences of the parents who are being silenced.We can—and must—demand more for our children. Because this is not it.
