A fantastic resource for area mountain bikers
The Allegheny County Park System (website link) consists of almost 12,000 acres of land in nine regional parks within Allegheny County. These parks are located in various geographical directions within a 25 mile radius of downtown. This park system is an amazing resource for mountain bikers from the region, with excellent, well maintained, single and double track. The whole system contains about 176 miles of non-paved trails. We are very lucky to have such an excellent network of trails in such close proximity to the city.
Blazing and Mapping Efforts
Countless hours of volunteer work - painting blazes on trees - has resulted in a significant proportion of the trails being very well marked (blazed). This excellent work not only included the actual blazing of the trails but determining which trails would be blazed. A lot of thought and hard work went into this effort.
Follow this link (article link) for a good article on the mapping and blazing of the trails at North Park.
Allegheny GIS Department (website link) has done a fantastic job of making publically available free maps of the parks. These maps typically indicate the blazed and non-blazed trails and were developed using GIS (Geographical Information System) mapping with GPS (Global Positioning System) technology (maps link).
Pittsburgh Location & Demographics
Strategically located in the heart of the Mid-Atlantic states, Allegheny County is only a short flight or a day's drive from many of the world's busiest commercial centers, including New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, and Toronto, Canada. These lucrative markets encompass more than 50 percent of the populations of both the United States and Canada, and account for 53 percent of the American buying income. Utilizing a transportation system that takes advantage of all modes of travel including highways, waterways, rail lines and one of the nation's most modern aviation facilities, Allegheny County is uniquely positioned to deliver its world class high-tech, bio-medical, manufacturing and communication products to markets throughout the world.
The landscape of Allegheny County can be characterized as rolling hills punctuated by several scenic river valleys that offer breathtaking vantage points to experience the splendor of all four seasons. Winter provides the perfect opportunities for skiers and sled riding as snow, while not in abundance, often blankets the area.
Surrounded by many rural farming communities, the spring season is the time of rejuvenation highlighted in the rebirth of the many forests and greenways that frame the local highways and byways.
The long days of summer afford the opportunity to work and yet still cut loose to enjoy the many recreational activities available to the local population.
Fall is probably the most appreciated time of the year for many Allegheny County natives. The hills come alive with a kaleidoscope of red, yellow and orange hues that leave the observer warm inside to carry through the winter doldrums until the onset of spring. Average temperatures for our location range anywhere from 18 degree Fahrenheit lows in January to 83 degree Fahrenheit highs in July
Mass Transit & Aviation
The mass transit needs of county residents are served by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, the 14th largest public transportation system in the country. Port Authority has a fleet of 1,000 buses, 83 light rail vehicles and 75 mini-buses. It also operates the Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines and sponsors ACCESS, the nation's largest paratransit program of its kind for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Port Authority provides fast and convenient service on three busways: the Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway transports riders between downtown and the eastern suburbs; the South Busway connects the South Hills and Station Square to downtown; and the West Busway links downtown to the Carnegie interchange of the Parkway West. With the busways, Port Authority offers a Park and Ride program, which has grown to 63 lots and more than 14,800 parking spaces.
The Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), opened in 1992 and situated on 12,900 acres 16 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh, is among the world's most modern airport terminal complexes. In 1998, more than 20.5 million travelers passed through PIT, which offers more than 600 daily non-stop flights to over 110 cities including non-stop international flights to several Canadian cities and to Paris and Frankfurt
