4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMagnet school with a large neighborhood population as well. Quite diverse, culturally and economically. Very few magnet spots available. Arts program is 5-star,comparable to private school. After-school arts programs for grades 3-5. Good violin program. Full-scale musical production every 2 years. Academics fine. Classroom teachers mostly good. Wide variety of different learning abilities in the classrooms, so challenging to meet all needs. Many new teachers and staff. Teachers still mostly white, more than half of the student body is Black. Also, Black student performance is not as strong as white. Still a few master teachers with 10+ years of experience, but many are quite young now. Building is safe but in disrepair. Building &grounds -2-star. Grades K-2 in main building, but grades 3-5 out in trailer classrooms connected by a wooden walkway that pools water on rainy days. Playground old and small, plus, the district added a big 4-classroom trailer on what used to be the basketball court, so play space has decreased considerably. School population has grown significantly, and has outgrown the building. School grew by about 150+ students (to about 630+) within just a few years. It is crowded. Class size limits keep the lower grade sizes small, but grades 3-5 can get as large as 28-30+ kids. The rooms are legally big enough, but uncomfortable and tight. Fewer parents volunteer than in the past. PTA used to be bigger and more active. Tightened security and a larger population means parents are discouraged from coming in the school much. Coming for lunch is encouraged. Some teachers like help, but many decline volunteer help from parents except for parties and field trips. Teacher-parent communication is good if the parent initiates. Teachers do not maintain websites or online homework boards. A few use PowerSchool to report grades, but many do not, so parents must stay on top of grades via direct communication. Most school work is not sent home or not sent home in a timely manner, so you have to ask to see it. ESL is strong and supports a large population of students who speak Arabic, Spanish, or other at home. The strength of the arts program balances out a lot of the concerns. Very good school for public option in this district, if you can get in.Parent Review6y ago - Check out schools near 1002 Montpelier Dr.
