What Locals Say about Alton

  • Daniel C.
"Alton is quite secluded, and far from a lot of the busier community, but the commute is a beautiful one, and I hardly notice the drive time."
  • Kelcie
"I’ve lived here my whole life and I know it as home. Safe and quiet, but can be busy during the summer with tourists! "
  • iamwilson
"Quiet little town: 2 grocery store, 2 gas stations, 2 small stores with good selection of items, A great Chinese Restaurant and great pizza shop. Shibley's on the Bay is nice in the summer, Pop's Clam shack has amazing fast food, and the best ice cream all summer long in all the Bay area restaurants,oh there is mini golf, free boat launch w parking and another boat launch next to Shibley's right on the bay but that launch has off site parking, 2 Marinas where you can also rent boat slips and dock your boat all summer, 3 hardware stores, a bike repair shop, Curves and a small gym in downtown which is not ideal but it is a gym, a flower shop, 2 post offices, veteranarian office, dance studio, music lessons, laundry, massage, chiropractor, dental office and Doctor office in town, Decent library, and many great business owners. The town is full of really nice people. In the winter Alton Bay is the only ICE airport in the lower 48. Many land planes all winter from Dec to late March on the frozen lake. Great ice fishing in the winter with Bob houses everywhere. This is a very tourist oriented town nice places to swim, craft fairs in the summer, it's pretty pet friendly, Police are great and did I mention that everyone around here is nice!. Elementary and Middle school is in Alton Central School a VERY old building ( falling apart in places) with excellent teaching staff. My kids loved this school. Prospect Mountain High School is also top notch. In the winter many kids snowmobile to school. Tons of snowmobile trails out here. Gunstock Ski Resort is within a 20 min drive. Wal Mart and major shopping within 30 min drive. Easy 1 hr. commute to Concord down highway 28 and guessing and. Highway 140 takes you to Tilton Outlet and thats about a 45 minute drive. Only complaint would be the 50 MPH speed limit on Mount Major Hwy until you are almost in town. Dangerous if you try to walk on that stretch of Highway. LOW TAX RATE. Great neighborhoods. No crime. I LOVE IT HERE!"

"I work here and find everything so convenient. Close to town for a post office, bank, fuel, groceries, hardware store, restaurants, school, golf, on the Merrymeeting River for kayaking and canoeing. Sandy beach to sit and relax and get back to nature. A swimming pool will be built next year! 2.5 miles from Alton Bay in The Lakes Region! Tucked away and peaceful setting!"
