We moved to Valley Glen in 2019 when our child was only a few years old without prior knowledge of what our local elementary school was like. We got SO lucky with Erwin Elementary!! At first my husband and I debated private school / applying for the LAUSD lottery but from the moment our child started kinder we knew that Erwin was the place to be. Principal Koudsi is incredible and you will know within 5 seconds of speaking with her that she genuinely cares about this school and every single student. Our daughter is in 3rd grade now and has not had a single bad teacher or school related issue. If any incident or question comes up, the staff is great and the communication from everyone is excellent. It's a small school and extremely diverse. I would supposed that if you are looking for what would be considered a "boujee" school, then this might not be your fit, but that's also not realistic in LA (an incredible and diverse expansive city). Every employee and teacher is extremely hands on making the school and community feel as close as what I imagine a small town vibe would be, but in a huge city. I know the school says 6/10 but we have friends with kids in Kester (with a higher rating) that have continuous issues with their kids. I'd highly recommend taking the chance or asking to meet with the principal if you are considering / on the fence. The PTA is humble but cares about the school and making great progress. Most importantly, watching all the kids grow with each other and blossom is incredibly heartwarming. Genuinely, I think this school is a gem.
