We spent one year at Journey and it was a less than great experience. Let me start by saying that our teachers and the coaches were AMAZING. I truly feel like they cared for my child and wanted the best for them. Our teachers fought for my child just as hard as I did. However, they could only do so much with the limited resources and support they had. If your child has to have an IEP evaluation done, I recommend being very aware of the diagnostic criteria for the condition your child has and having an advocate attend each meeting. The evaluators come into the meeting with their mind made up about your child and are not open to discussion. During the meetings, I was basically told I should be happy my child is not more disabled. We have since moved out of the district and my child now receives the support that Journey didn’t feel they met criteria for. This is not an issue specific to Journey, but Wentzville uses tablets to test a child’s reading skills. So of course my child tested fine using this method. However, when my child was tested one-on-one on their actually reading abilities, they tested in the 20th percentile. The district focuses on the iReady scores, so there’s not much the teacher can do if you have concerns.Because of the above issues, I feel that Journey enables an environment for children to slip through the cracks and not have their needs properly met. It has potential to be a great school, but the district is just growing too fast to be able to keep up with the resources and support their students require.
