"Lots of good Jamaican, Trinidadian, Haitian, and Dominican Food. We also have Thai, Sushi, and Indian. Like most Bk neighborhoods we have good Chinese spots for takeout. Labor Day Parade is a fun time but lots of potentials for gang related shootings. Neighborhood is centrally located to trains, Prospect Park, and you can easily get downtown. If only the prices would be more affordable for the people who grew up here. By design we are leaving and looking to buy elsewhere. Safety is not an issue for us, we know people here. It’s a shame we have to leave and new people come in, reading these comments to know if it’s safe. Short answer: Not really. You may not get shot or robbed but you won’t feel safe for a while until you start to know people. "

"Prospect park offers a variety of live shows and events throughout the year, there are street fairs on Flatbush and other cultural events throughout if you keep your eyes open and ears to the ground. TONS of food options and the neighborhood is only adding more variety as the years pass. Library branches nearby and so much more! Convenient transit to NYC and the beach or Coney Island - also close to Barclays and accessible to downtown... truly a GREAT place to be."

Flatbush Guide

What's it like to live in Flatbush?

No matter what type of character home buyers prefer in a neighborhood, Flatbush is a reasonably good option. Overall, this part of the city has a large number of places for those looking for a dynamic vibe. Even though this area is not known for its nightlife, there are often crowds of people around. Flatbush is good for those who need quiet surroundings, as there are low levels of noise from traffic - although that is not the case closer to the railway line. The greenery in this part of the city is not especially prominent; more specifically, residents will find that relatively few tree-lined streets are around. Nonetheless, parks are easy to reach since there are a few of them nearby for residents to discover.

What kinds of homes are available in Flatbush?

Roughly 80% of the population of this neighborhood rent their home and 20% are owners. In this part of the city, many buildings are large apartment buildings, whereas the remainder are mainly small apartment buildings and duplexes. Most of the housing growth in this neighborhood happened prior to the 1960s. This neighborhood offers mainly two bedroom and one bedroom homes.

What are the schools, restaurants and shopping like in Flatbush?

A general and a specialty grocery store is always only a very short walk away in Flatbush. Additionally, those who are fond of eating out won't have to go far in this part of the city, where over 100 restaurants and a few cafes are available. It is also a short distance to a very good variety of clothing stores, for example along Flatbush Avenue. As far as education is concerned, locals will appreciate the proximity to primary as well as high schools, which are within walking distance from all homes for sale in Flatbush. At the elementary level, there are both public and private schools.

What are the best ways to get around in Flatbush?

This part of New York does not require use of a car as various other modes of transportation are at the disposal of property owners. Flatbush is especially transit friendly. More specifically, it is straightforward to reach a nearby rapid transit station, including Flatbush Av - Brooklyn College Station, Church Av Station and Beverly Road Station on the 2 | 7 Avenue Express, 5 | Lexington Avenue Express and 5X | Lexington Avenue Express, from the greater part of houses in the neighborhood. Property owners benefit from about 10 bus lines, and bus stops are not very far away from most residences. Traveling on foot is also very convenient for home buyers in Flatbush; most daily errands can be run without having to resort to a car, and many businesses are very nearby. Bicycling is easy in this area since the bicycling infrastructure is well-developed, and riding a bike is made easier by the generally flat terrain.
