My husband and I are both NV alumni. Our child is currently enrolled, however we are seeking an alternative source of education. Our child is gifted academically and it's very discouraging to see him so bored in the classroom. He is blatantly discouraged from "trying too hard". I've been repeatedly asked by the teacher to stop teaching him extras at home because we need to keep all the kids in the classroom at the same level. There is such a high emphasis on sports, academics are an after thought. We do have amazing athletes, but at what cost? I've witnessed first hand athletes being "passed" in the classroom and not being held to the same standard as the rest of the class. (Often not required to complete work because they're "tired" or "stressed" because of an upcoming game.) I've watched these same children flounder and fail in college because they weren't prepared. Athletic programs are important, but academics should have a higher priority. For the success and growth of our own child, it's imperative we find a different school.

As a former student, I was honestly shocked to read some of the comments on this site. Does North Vermillion value sports, they absolutely do. But if they had teams that were year in and year out competing for championships and they didn't do one thing to promote them, there'd be another group of people complaining about that. High School sports are a large part of the high school experience and should be celebrated. The teaching staff at NV was one of the best I've encountered. I too attended schools in several states, and even multiple schools in the area surrounding NVHS and I never felt as cared for then what I felt from the staff at NV. Most of the teachers come and work their job and then commit time after school to coach, sponsor a club, tutor, etc all for the sake of the students in the building. I would agree that the community NV serves is not a highly educated community. A good education though starts at home. High expectations from parents that are followed through with rewards and consequences. There were so many students in my graduating class that had no support from their parents and didn't care if they brought home an A or an F. Why should the school be talked down upon because they have some students that don't want better for themselves? Education is like anything in life, if you want it, you have to go get it. If you don't want it, you'll never get it.NV has several extracurricular opportunities from sports, FFA, Robotics Club, Crochet Club, E-Sports Team, Dance Team, Band, Choir, Drama/Theatre, Art, etc. Does another school offer something NV doesn't? Of course! That doesn't make NV a bad school.If you come across someone that doesn't have one positive thing to say about something, that might not be the person you take advice from. Anybody can find anything to complain about no matter the school. They all have flaws. NV is a school that serves a low socioeconomic community that has limited housing, & limited jobs. Yet they put together a licensed and competent staff and make the best effort they have to teach students what they need to know. At the end of the day some of the responsibility for a quality education resides with the students and their parents. North Vermillion is an excellent school and I would recommend it to anyone.
