Harwood Elementary is a hidden gem ! ! Their class STAR scores are at the top of any in North Dakota. Harwood elementary and Northern Cass school are the top in the Fargo Moorhead area ! ! My son attended grades 2-5. My son was a GATE ( Gifted And Talented Education) student and needed other GATE students to push him. He was open enrolled. 33% of his class tested into GATE, which is literally unheard of. Harwood Elementary is a National Blue Ribbon of Excellence TWICE. The latest was 2019.Class sizes are 16-20, total enrollment is consistently between 120-130 students in grades K-5. The teachers truly care and have been handpicked by the principal to be the best available in the area. If your student is struggling the support they receive is unmatched in the F-M area. Student learning is ahead of schools in the area, and equal to Northern Cass.As a parent I have spent hours in the classroom, class trip chaperone, and as an active PTO member. Parent engagement / support is FAR above anything you will find in the larger schools in the area.It was an excellent experience for my son, at a school where EVERY teacher, administrator, and para knew each child's name.Overall an excellent experience for my son and me ! ! !

The school cafeteria allows children to charge whatever they want to on the lunch account. The parent cannot even keep a low balance to curb this problem, because the school allows the account to go negative with no help for the parents to teach the children control in charging. The electronic devices will not be kept at the school, even though the parent requests assistance (with helping a child with a disability to learn how to handle the responsibility by KEEPING IT AT SCHOOL) and does not initially listen when parents bring concerns about how situations can and will be handled with the child who struggles.Bottom line: Parents who are trying to teach their children responsibility as they grow and learn will receive ZERO support from this particular school in many ways, not just the couple of examples listed here.Disappointed Parent

This school is not engaging with their students. My child was a special ed student here. High functioning autism. There was a bullying incident that occurred here that was swept under the rug and not resolved. This caused my child to become severely depressed. Very long story short, due to this incident, my child was having a hard time in school. The Special Ed department did not make the effort to find ways to help him. They kept asking ME to find something that worked for him and when I did, they would not follow up on their end. The resource room was too noisy for him to concentrate (he has ADHD and Asperger's) so they sat him in the hallway. They did not suggest anything for his IEP to help him move forward in his studies. I knew he wasn't doing well in his studies, and they kept making him taking online classes. So he sat in study halls for hours at a time (with ADHD mind you) or had to have me help him at home (so now I'm doing the teacher's job). I knew he wasn't passing some of his classes, but I was always told he could do them in the summer, or add them in the following year, etc. Here's the kicker. At his last IEP meeting, I was told he needed 3 years of school to graduate (he was a JR in HS) and that it would be best if he DROP OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL AND GET HIS GED!!!!He is a special ed student, a Jr, so he doesn't even have all the education he needs to even take Sr level testing for a GED. He was just a problem for them, and they didn't want to deal any more. Avoid this school if you can. I think the numbers say it all!
