6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AveragePlease don't send your child here. We moved to this district with high hopes after having bad experiences with another NC high school. Hopes were dashed quickly. NC schools, in general, seem to not care about IEPs or 504 plans. We were told in our meeting with the counselor and only one teacher that since our child was making at least a B in every class that they did not need accommodations! My child has chronic health conditions that include widespread chronic pain and brain fog and orthostatic intolerance, etc. They sometimes need to use a cane due to joint weakness! They also have mental health conditions brought on due to their chronic health conditions. This school was a nightmare for my teenager. My teen tried to drop a class that was causing them to feel depressed and they had been having suicidal thoughts because of the stress of the entire experience (between having classes that were spread out across the entire campus that they had almost no time to rush to while using a cane and nearly passing out due to tachycardia, not being able to eat lunch because there are so many students and the line is so long that the lunch break is over before half of them get to get their food every day!, and dealing with one teacher who may as well have been a Confederate soldier who yelled at everyone and another who was putting extreme pressure on them to be his pet artist due to my kid's talent). The last straw was when we got called to pick my teen up because they were a "suicide" risk due to looking up ways to AVOID suicide on their Chromebook at school one day. They were told not to come back unless they had a note from a random mental health place that assesses for suicide risk. Even though my child already had a therapist and doctors. This place is why they dropped out of school. They are now doing amazing at the end of freshman year at WCU, after getting a high school equivalency diploma. Oh and this high school never even gave me my kid's records when asked.Parent Review1y ago - West Hoke Middle

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI HATE THIS SCHOOL WITH A PASSION DON'T COME HERE EVER THEY WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE< THEY BULLY PEOPLE,AND THEY JUST TALK ABOUT PEOPLE FOR NO REASON I WISH I NEVER CAME TO THIS SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY HAVE RUINED MY LIFE THE THREE YEARS I HAVE BEEN HERE THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU WELL BEING AND THEY DON'T LIKE TO SEE YOU HAPPY,THIS SCHOOL IS A DISASTER ADMIN DOESN'T EVEN MAKE THINGS BETTER THEY ARE SO WORRIED ABOUT THEIR REPUTATION THAT THEY LIE AND SAY THAT THEY TAKE CARE OF PROBLEMS BUT THEY NEVER DO, THEY LET PEOPLE GET AWAY WITH THINGS JUST BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT THEY CAN AND ITS NOT ACCEPTABLE,SO YOU GUYS IF YOU WANT TO SAVE YOURSELF OR YOUR CHILDREN DON'T ENROLL THEM INTO THIS SCHOOL.Student Review5mo ago - Scurlock Elementary

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageOver the last two years my children have attended here we have had a multitude of issues. We have witnessed moldy food be given to our children. This was found in a juice that was sent home. The milk they serve has sometimes been spoiled. This year while still trying to protect people from COVID they can't get my kids to school on time. Their bus often times arrives to the bus stop 30 to 40 min late everyday. If you attempt to drive your children to school they do not want you to get out of your car and they will open the car door and unbuckle your children from their car seats as well as try to move your seats in your. They say it's for safety but I don't know who they are protecting. The parent from getting hit by a car or trying to limit the spread of germs. All the while they are touching everyone's vehicles without sanitizing their hands before touching each car. If you are able to find a place to live out side of this school district I would. This is the 5th state my kids have attended school and this is by far the worst school in regards to communication and level of education I have seen this far.Parent Review2y ago - Sandhoke Early College High School

9/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy son is currently a sophomore SandHoke early college high school. He is a very smart kid & pretty good student who ALWAYS completes his work although at times not to his greatest ability. Now, at this school he has flourished, he had grown in maturity as well as academically. While he still doesn't LOVE going to school (what teen does) he doesn't want to miss a day. He comes home telling me all that he has learned and has a new eagerness to learn. He has 2 college classes he has just started and I can just see the pride he has when he tells people he is taking college courses and will graduate with a diploma & an Associates degree. Unfortunately, we have just found out that we will be relocating VERY soon to another area with a poor school system. As heartbreaking as this is we may consider having our son stay behind with family because he loves his school. So, as rambling as the review may be just know this...my family would highly recommend this school. Im just sad that my soon to be middle schooler will be missing out on this opportunity.Parent Review9y ago - Check out schools near 176 Cape Fear Rd.

"Downtown few blocks away. People are friendly. Lots of family things to do outside . Houses are in shortage because everyone likes it’s quaintness. There a good mix of people from all walks of life. There is quite a bit of fast food but I would say a shortage of good sit down restaurants. The closest is about 15 minutes away"

"Not far from the city but far enough away to feel like you live in a country setting. Not a ton of crime but officers are slow to respond when there is crime. Grocery stores aren’t very far and there isn’t city taxes to pay. "

"Educational wise, I'd say for 4th-11th grade look into A non-public school, ( Academy, Christian, private, online). Due to the limited area, growing population, half fraction amount of buses, minor lack of school classrooms & teachers, classrooms maybe a little crowded, an of course every child should have the attention they fully need and deserve. However, only some schools in the location are able to offer such great standards. IF your child goes to a school in the area currently, I recommend summer school for a few weeks, maybe a few online courses to keep their mind pumping with useable knowledge! 🌎 -A couple of the year-round schools are also pretty decent. ---With that being said, I'm not taking anything away from the great teachers that do an amazing and brilliant job with ALL of our kids out here! after all, it's our fault for the shape and struggles that these kids AND teachers go through! WE have to HELP THEM, So THEY can TEACH OUR kids!"
