7/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have two kids that currently attend JHS. The school has quite a few problems, kids smoke/vape in the bathrooms all day and nobody does anything about it, teachers allow horrible profanity, there are mice in some parts of the school, the D wing stinks of sewage when it rains, the secondary gym is old and musty with terrible ventilation. The kids are not allowed enough time to go to their lockers between classes so they have to lug ALL their books all day. The school is unable to plan lunch time so kids have enough seats in the cafeteria so some kids have to eat in the hallways sitting on the floor. While doing virtual the teachers barely spend any time instructing, my kids maybe get a couple hours a day. The teachers do not follow their own plan to assign homework for the week on Monday but rather do it haphazardly. The teachers seem lazy and not vested in properly teaching during the shutdown. Instead assigning busy work to make it seem like they are doing something.Parent Review3y ago - North Jefferson Elementary School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageMy experience with this school is positive. I have a special needs child and he loves going to school everyday. He is in a mainstream classroom, that is not overcrowded, and learning more than I could expect at his grade. The communication between myself and his teachers are great. I never feel like a burden if I have questions or want to volunteer time. The staff has welcomed my whole family, I have 2 children not school age yet, when I enter the building. I couldn't be happier. I do believe if you want a good relationship with your child's school, you need to be active in some way with their education. The technology is growing there, smartboards, ipads, computer lab, etc......Parent Review10y ago - Shepherdstown Middle School

5/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageSchools in general have developed new ways in teaching children how to read, governed by state guidelines. Many of our teachers and schools have relied on computers to do their job in teaching a child to read. What ever happened to the old ways in teaching a child to read? Writing words on a blackboard. Teaching pronunciation by writing, not typing. A teacher sitting down with their students reading a book with them, pointing out the words as they read instead of handing them a book then sitting them in front of a computer to answer questions about it. Its truly sad that the old ways are forgotten by many. We wonder why our kids have problems with reading and comprehension. We've become lazy and rely to much on computers in doing the teaching. "It’s a nice area that’s fairly quiet. I’ve lived in Baker Heights almost my entire life. It’s a good place to live that’s just the right distance away from town, yet close enough to major amenities. "
