6/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have 2 children who have attend this school. One is in 5th grade this year and has done her whole elementary career at Southwood. The staff and Teachers are amazing and go above and beyond for the students. The student body is kind and respectfull . This school has gone out of their way to help challenge and accommodate my child who scores above average. They have helped instill and nature leadership skills and independence in both of my children. Twice over the the last 6 years we've had an issue with another student and the teachers and the principal have handled it very well with all of the students best interest in mind. I would very highly recommend Southwood.Parent Review6y ago - East Kentwood High School

4/10GreatSchools RatingParent Rating AverageI have two students in this school, One is Special Needs and the other is an advanced student. My special needs student has an amazing special education team working with him and is moving along very well. However my advanced student is faced with teachers who don't care and hand out assignments online without explanation and refuse to answer questions when asked, one of the teachers even told him she doesn't know the answer and he needs to google it. The bullying problem at this school is totally out of hand. My advanced student was being punched over and over again on a daily basis in the back of the head by a child who was known to be a big problem and they refused to do anything about or even address it even after my student made several complaints and I also called several times. My child finally snapped one day and hit this kid back and the kid then proceeded to beat him up until he was bleeding and had several knots on his head and guess who got in trouble? YEP they decided that my student was the problem and they declined to punish the other child stating that he's a troubled kid and they are trying to work with him rather than punish him so he gets a free pass to punch anyone he wants to while my child who has never been in trouble, makes good grades, is known to be a helpful student etc was suspended for several days. The staff here are nice but make a lot of empty promises and have no follow through due to lack of communication amongst themselves.Parent Review1y ago - Check out schools near 101 Centerbrook Dr SE #93.

"Keep very close eyes on your children as they all like to collectively play in the streets/roads. It’s nice to see other people casually walking their dogs and pups. It’s nice to see people walking around in general. Let’s us know we can trust the area with that at most."

"The neighborhood's walkability is what attracted my family. We can fulfill most of our needs without leaving the neighborhood, and mainly use or bikes or feet for transportation. We're also near four bus lines that can get us all around the city, and have either bike infrastructure or side streets that can get us downtown without ado. "

"We love Alger Heights: we're in walking distance to almost everything we need, including multiple grocery stores, a hardware store, restaurants, library, post office, parks, and more. Neighbors tend to be friendly and homes well-kept, and the neighborhood safe and quiet. We're near multiple bus lines and an easy bike ride downtown. "
