Being neutral with colors is the key. Don't use white paint....but any shade of tan and earthy tones (that aren't too dark) work well. It's OK to do an accent wall a little darker or brighter. I am an agent who is also a certifed home stager and this is what I tell my clients. If the walls are neutral - then you can bring in "pops" of color with decorations.
The most important staging tips: neurtalize, de-clutter (rent a storage), use framed mirrors and large area rugs. I'm not sure of the style of your house and current decor. The "Pottery Barn" look seems to be very popular currently.
