Hi G. Ball. I think that some furniture is better than completely empty. However, it is important that the furniture is nice and placed correctly. There's something called vignette staging which involves only a little bit of furniture in the right places which will show spaciousness without the empty look. For instance, you'd have a small dining table with a few chairs and place setting in the dining room or dining area. You'd have a bed (queen size) in the master bedroom. There should be a nice bedspread or comforter with throw pillows. You may want to place it at an angle.
If you do any kind of staging, it's imperative that the house is really clean. A coat of fresh paint also does wonders. You can get ideas at www.stagedhomes.com I would also suggest you speak to your real estate agent. Many have experience with this and can give you helpful hints. Good luck.
