Brian: I suppose you could call Carlsbad's La Costa an "old neighborhood," by San Diego standards (late 1960's-present), but expensive property facelifts are common. The balmy coastal location of La Costa is nonpareil, and this was recognized quickly by early developers. The prime land around the golf course was developed first--and that is the reason some might call the neighborhood "old." Prime land is always the first to go--and the homes built there will ultimately be the best candidates for renovation--or re-building.
