The reason they say it is a good idea is because it could make possible buyers think they might loose out to someone else when their looking at the home and see several other people looking at the same time. Maybe you figure where you are going to target to get clients.

Are you going to buy leads, join groups, do postcards, go door-to-door?

How about working with other professionals like insurance people, lawyers, accountants?
