Gilbert is a great community; just a few months ago a more upscale mall opened up off the new San Tan 202 freeway. The area is very family-friendly; lots of parks and community events throughout the year. There are pockets that are absolutely fantastic, and there are pockets that are good-- it just depends on what your priorities are.
In southeast Gilbert, you have Power Ranch and Seville-- two enormous master-planed golf communities with their own schools and parks. There are some fantastic values-- anything between a 1200 square foot 2br/2ba for around $150k (resale), all the way up to the $1m luxury estate on a golf course. They are still building in Seville. I lived there until 2006.
