The only way you can get around the "fee agreement" is if you do not agree to move into the unit you signed for or most of the time, the entire building!! The thing is, in most cases, the seeker does not know where or how to start the new home search. For example, you are not feeling well and have no idea why. You would go to the ER to help yourself and solve your issue right?? While in the ER you pay just to be seen. Well agents are paid for you to see. You tell them your likes and dislikes as well as Ideal location. Just as a Doctor you would tell then your pain and discomforts and where the pain is located!!! In brief, if you love that place, it might be worth the doctor visit. otherwise you will be looking at "home remedies". Get it!!?? ... more

Dear Trulia Brooklyn:

Real estate brokers exist on this planet because there is a need for our/their services. We make a buyer's, seller's, tenant's and landlord's life easier and that is why people are willing to pay us a fee for our services. If you want to save the money, you can try and do it yourself, but you may find that the added time you spend will not be worth the money you saved. Time is the most precious commodity we have, how much is your time worth?

If you still do not want an agent to help you, I would suggest you read the classified sections in newspapers, look for sign in the supermarkets and/or houses of worship and then go online to see what you can find. Google "apartments for rent by owner" with the zip codes you are looking in. Good luck!

Sincerely,
Mitchell S. Feldman
