If you click on Date Range tab next to Map Tools just above the map you can change the dates so that you are looking at July. You can also change the types of crimes that you are looking for. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

If your primary concern is safety then. . . avoid every neighborhood except the West side of Magnolia, Blue Ridge, North Beach, Upper Queen Anne, Matthew's Beach, Laurelhurst, View Ridge, Madison Park, and/or Wedgewood. If I were renting or buying, I'd go for Magnolia. But your choice will also depend on where in Seattle your husband works as the commute can really vary depending on the neighborhood, what your price range is, and what amenities you want to live near. If you didn't care so much about crime you might want to check out Wallingford, Belltown, West Seattle (as close to the Sound as you can get), Mt. Baker, Phinney Ridge, Montlake, Madrona, Columbia City, Ballard, or Ravenna as these neighborhoods have a lot to offer. If your husband doesn't mind a commute of 1/2 hour or so, consider Bainbridge Island--extremely low crime and great place to live. Other outlying neighborhoods that you might want to consider if you want a more suburban feel include: Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah, or Sammamish (to the East). If you want a great deal, consider Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Bothell, Kenmore, Burien, DesMoines, or Federal Way, though I don't think crime rates are that great in any of those places. ... more

Yes, Magnolia is actually very safe and the recent car prowls have been very unusual. The community has been very concerned and I am sure now have a heightened awareness that will reduce this upswing very quickly.

Because Magnolia is on it's own little penninsula with only two bridges into the community, it is a little isolated from the rest of Seattle, and has almost no drive through traffice. This isolation and lack of drive through traffic I think helps to make the community safer than most.

Where I come from in Australia they have gone away from speed bumps and are putting is "shackains" that's not how you spell it but it is how it is pronounced.
It is basically a garden on the left side of the road and then a garden on the right side of the road that turns the 2 lanes into 1, some even combine it with a speed bump to make it more effective.
I would temper the suggestion with the fact that not everyone will be pleased with this solution.
Another option would be to request the police to frequent the area with speed traps....but first you should find out who owns the roads and the legitimacy of the speed limit and who has the charter to enforce it....communities can post speed limits that do not conform to state and county regs and may not be enforceable....they may simply be "advised" speed limits.
Good Luck, I have kids and want to keep them safe aswell, but my answer is to provide them a place to play and tell them not to play on the street.
