You should check with a real estate attorney on local laws that govern this situation. In some areas, if you allow your neighbor to encroach on your property for 5 years straight, then that part of the property becomes his.

One option is to create an easement for your neighbor. This way, you're granting him the right to use the strip of land but not transferring the right of ownership to him.

A more formal option is to perform a lot line adjustment. You'll need to get a surveyor to generate a new plat map and record the new lot line with the county. The cost for both will probably run you about $5-10K. This keeps the property lines clear and doesn't present any complications on any future sales.

It would help to know where you will be working; for example on the east side of town or on the west side. On the west side I would recommend west Beaverton or Hillsboro for acreage and that great country feel. For smaller class sizes, I would pin the area down a little more and also consider the school's overall rating. Let me know if I can show you some properties when you are in town :)

The price point you are at on the east side of town will not get you what you can get in beaverton. Our market is tight on rentals so if you are moving by march you need to find a place now. In Portland you have to go to the,school in your area, but you are a few years from starting grade school. The closer to town the price goes up. Pets will cost $400 pet deposit not sure how many places will take only month to month? Our vacancy rate is about 4% or less so landlords can be picky. You have it on Trulia already. Click on the "Advice" tab, and then either leave both the keyword and location fields blank and click "search", which has the advantage of showing you the most popular questions, or you can enter a key word or location to narrow it down.

Personally I have answered more than 500 questions on Trulia and they just seem to keep coming. Good luck with the publication. Is it a "paper" paper or an "e-paper"?

I asked because I just learned that nine of the top ten NY Times best sellers have sold more than 50% of total sales as e-books.

Ok Krista. Low taxes, good transportation, low crime, walk to shops, access to the freeway, health clubs, night clubs, wetland trails, and other fun stuff can all be found in the following areas:

In the City:

Definitely NW Portland close in between the 405 Freeway and NW 25th street. For a true urban living experience this can not be beat.

In the Suburbs in Order of where I would go:

Bethany Village area: 7 miles to Downtown PDX. Close to Nike, Columbia Sports Wear, Intel. Tons of Parks and shops and the entire area is connected through walking and bike trails. Great Health clubs, a few good restaurants. Out of the Traffic grid. Right at the base of the Tualatin Mountains with access to Forest Park trails. Enhanced Sheriffs Patrol area with very LOW crime. Very YUPPIE Country Club nice feel. Good place to set up camp if you are just getting started.

Tanasbourne area in the High tech Corridor about 10 miles West of PDX has it all.

Orenco Station. Very Cool and pedestrian and light rail friendly: About 12 miles west of town. This area won the best new home community in America three times in a row and there are good choices of apartments, lofts, and homes for rent.

Lake Oswego Old Town: Most affluent area but really cool. Very Country Club with lots of stores and shops and all of the "beautiful people" of course.

Murray Hill. In the Beaverton area.

These are a few.

Use Craigslist in PDX for Rentals. There are a ton on there and lots of people here use it.
