So, other information would be necessary, such as for how much are you pre-approved (your first step should be contacting a mortgage broker and discussing your individual situation), are you interested in close-in urban neighborhoods or the Portland Metro 'burbs (both offer good schools and good homes), do you like older, vintage homes or prefer newer construction. Craigslist is the absolute best place to search for a rental home. As a landlord, I don't even post elsewhere, as that is where all the serious renters search. You can also try and may find property managers list properties there. Trulia of course has a rental section, but I have personally never even looked at it. Also, many rental companies have large inventories of homes, so if you inquire about one of their properties, ask for a list of all homes coming available. Most landlords probably don't realize that pigs can make great house pets, so you may want to provide references from past landlords, or perhaps a few letters from people that know your pig and can attest to his awesomeness.
If you have a specific neighborhood in mind, cruising the streets for rent signs can't hurt.

Also, there are very few one bedroom homes- if you are trying to save money but still want something that feels like your own, you are more likely to find one side of a duplex.

Trulia and other sites like Zillow don't take into account the condition of the home, just square footage and properties nearby that sold. If property is very similar to it' neighbors that recently sold, it is more likely to be accurate. If it's in poor condition, a different size, style, remodeled extensively, etc, it will be less accurate.

There are over 10,000 homes for sale in the Portland metro area and over 6,000 agents (I believe), so it is no surprise if you don't see the signs of one particular agent hanging around town. Most signs are buried in residential neighborhoods and don't get a lot of visibility unless the agent is selling a home on a busy street.

I'd recommend having some agents over and letting them do their presentation so you can ask them questions and find out what they can do for you.

It could be that they are in a CONTRACT, but that the Escrow has not Closed.
Or, it could mean that the OFFER has not been ACCEPTED yet.

It definitely means that the property is in Limbo; tied up for now.

Portland is TERRIBLY congested. We dont have rush 'hour'---we have rush DAY. Road systems were not built for our population and there is littlehope of it ever being fixable. Growth is planned to the east of Portland.

Its actually not too bad going into downtown from that area, as you have many routes. It depends a lot on what you consider 'downtown', also. Its not fun at all to try for downtown from western areas. You would be east/southeast of it. Yes there are stores and restaurants all around you.
