Realtors are prohibited by law from telling you whether or not any specific neighborhood is safe. It’s called “steering” and we are prohibited by our code of ethics and federal law from providing such information. Here are a couple posts that explain more:

However, we CAN tell you where to go to get information. In your case, for Hayward crime statistics, go to the following site:

You are the best judge of how you and your wife can be safe wherever you are.....

You can certainly take all kinds of precautions --- like making sure your place is secure (locks on doors, windows, security alarm, neighborhood watch, watch dog)

Don't open doors to anyone you don't know

Be constantly aware of what's going on around you

Don't take any risks -- like walking alone late at night or early morning

Lock your car doors and don't leave any valuables in the car

And so on....

Having done a fair amount of research into this topic, I can tell you that crime is *fairly* evenly distributed throughout Hayward, and Hayward's overall crime rate is slightly lower than the national average. However, I still consider Hayward to be a moderate- to high-crime city by Bay Area standards.

The best way to understand crime in a neighborhood is to spend a few hours driving the neighborhood and talking with residents. Ask them about the sort of crime that occurs in the area; ask them if they feel safe; if they say crime in the area is low, ask them where crime *does* occur. Probe for details.

I've posted two referrence documents on my website for you. The first is a breakdown of crime in Hayward as a whole, from homes.com. The second is a breakdown of crime "per beat" in Hayward. Tyrell is in Beat G.
