This neighborhood is adjacent to San Francisco State University, making it an ideal location for new students who can't afford to live on-campus ($700-$900/mo. for your own room). The colonial style homes are uncommon elsewhere in San Francisco, and feature hardwood floors and convenient access to laundry. It's heavily populated with students, meaning parties are common. ... more

Owning a car here can be extremely frustrating; parking is nearly impossible and you can expect your car to be broken-into about once a year. Public transportation here is also lackluster, and without a car you will become utterly dependent on the "M" light-rail. It's heavily populated with students, meaning parties are common. ... more

Having lived in the area for more than a year, here are some things to consider:
- Easy car access to both East (I-80) as well as south (101 and 280); as well as public transportation (except limited Bart stations)
- Close to a lot of businesses and potential employers especially if you work in tech these days
- A heaven for Giant's fans with walking distance to stadium
- At least in some areas, a great variety of restaurants to choose from
- If you like living in a loft, this is probably the best area in San Francisco to find one

Here are some Con's to consider:
- you're constantly surrounded by concrete and a decent amount of traffic
- despite some "nice and active" parts of SoMa, there are many many blocks that are quite shady and populated by homeless people at night (and day sometimes). Anything past 5th street and also near 1st and 2nd & Harrison are some of those areas.
- if you like access to some good road biking or running on trails, SoMa is not a great place to live (consider Marina, Cow hollow, Presidio in San Francisco (or North or East Bay)
- you'll suffer from the daily 80-bridge traffic and Giants game traffic on game days

Large houses, great views. Right near Mt. Davidson Park. You can look up at night and see the airplanes flying around to land at SFO. If you view your home as a status symbol, this is a 'place to be'. ... more

The weather is very chilly. There is very little bus transportation to this area. The streets are extremely narrow, only one car can pass at a time on some streets. Car breakins are common, but I feel safe taking walks late at night. This is definitely a residential area - and the only grocery store in the area is fancy and expensive. ... more
