More dangerous than what? It would be wise to consider anything more dangerous during time of distaster.

Hi Alison,

I have done this, albeit a few years ago. I felt it was safe and the best way to look up vacancies is to use the website http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=468 and follow the Reserve link (use the map to check the location)

Enjoy.

Hi Leslie:

The best way to find out about local crime and crime statistics is to contact the local precinct. For the fastest information you can use Trulia's crime section: http://www.trulia.com/crime or go to http://spotcrime.com which is a great site too.

On a personal note, I recently found a condo in the Mosaica for a couple in Mountain View who wanted a home for their daughter who is attending school in SF. It's on Alabama street btwn 18th and 19th which is just one block away. I saw their daughter today and asked her about how she liked her new home and her new neighborhood. She said nothing but positive things about the area and mentioned that she liked walking around it when she wasn't in class.

Best of luck!

Gabriel

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Hi Camille-

Safety can be relative so the best thing to do is to drive through the area to get a feel for it. You could also check out the crime map on the SF Police Depts website.

Best of luck.

This neighborhood is extremely safe. There are a couple of panhandlers that commute to West Portal, but they are not aggressive. The merchants know their customers, and are more than happy to help those who frequent their businesses. The biggest problem is the vehicles in the area, who do not always follow the rules of the road (what else is new?). It is a family oriented area, with a true neighborhood feel. ... more
