I all depends on how bad your credit is. Are there judgements against you and if so what kind and how many. In some cases you will still be able to rent but you will need at a minimum first, last and security deposit. Most reputable companies will also look at employment stability, possible co-signers, etc Beware of rents or conditions that are too good to be true. Some landlords have property that is going in foreclosure. You will end up moving in a couple of months and quite possibly lose your security deposit. ... more

Have you overcome the financial hardship? If it is now resolved, then this would be the time to start working on improving your credit. I don't know of any lenders who can work with a credit score in the 400s, but I do know someone who may be able to help you work on your credit. It is not a quick fix, rather something you would need to work on over time.
