Real estate agents are not allowed to comment on a variety of topics. The Fair Housing Act restricts the information that can be provided by a real estate agent.

Off Limit Topics Include:
• Crime Statistic (including questions about whether a neighborhood is good or bad or safe)
• Demographics
• Environmental Concerns
• Household Income
• Religion
• Schools (including questions about how good or bad the school is)

Determining to the answers to questions on any of the topics listed above is something that you would need to do on your own. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. If a real estate agent were to comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.

Some websites to try include:

Hi Philip,

As Realtors, we cannot tell you that an area is safe or not. It is a violation of Georgia License Law. We can however suggest where to find various kinds information. You have taken the first step by investigation crime reports on-line. If you have not already done so, look at the Atlanta Police Department's website too. They proivide very detailed information about types, location and date crimes occured. Use Google Streetview to explore the area virtually, but pay attention to how old the photographs are.

The most important think to do is to visit the area yourself at various times of day and of the week. Walk around the neighborhood, talk to people who live there, and judge for yourself. You might stop by the local police precinct too and get their thoughts.

Best of Luck,

Drive the neighborhood at night, with the windows down, with your loved ones in the car with you, and check out the scene.

Talk to neighbors.

Meet the beat cops.

Read the beat book at the Zone office or check out the pin maps online at the APD website.

Make your own candid observsations.

Hi, Kevin:

I am not a resident but from someone that is always in the area it seems as though the 'targets' that we hear about are mainly college students. Check the crime stats at APD and go down to the #11 Fire Precinct and talk with the firefighters - they will certainly give it to you straight. Also, Home Park has neighborhood association meetings that will probably give you an in depth perspective of the good and the challenges. APD has increased patrols in and around the area as well. Hope that helps until a resident answers!

Contact the local police station and they can give you a crime report. Better yet, obtain a crime report of the community in which you currently reside to compare.

Hi Debra,

It depends on how comfortable you are yourself in the area for the most part. As far as the possible amount of crime in the neighborhood you should consult with the local police department.

If you have any other questions I would be happy to help.

Issues of crime an safety are often best referred to the local police department or the county sheriff's department. They have access to the most current and accurate information and are generally willing to be helpful.
