Gail Gladstone answered:
I have been a landlord for years and never heard of this. Of course, I require all of my tenants to maintain not only insurance coverage for their belongings, but also general liability with my name added to the Certificate of INsurance.

So, the answer is probably going to be no. Unless of course you can prove they were negligent in some way that allowed a burglary.

Speak with an attorney.

Interesting question. I would check with a lawyer on this one. I believe the answer would be yes, the Fair Housing Act would apply to ANY AND ALL Residential leases, but if you really think it's an issue, check with a lawyer to be sure. ... more

Dear Katie:

As I stated in my answer to your other question...

You need to investigate the areas in person. Go in the daytime, nighttime and even later at night (10-11PM or maybe even 2AM). Talk to people in the neighborhood and even small business owners in the area. Go to the local police precinct and find out the crime statistics. You can Google "crime statistics" with a zip code or neighborhood and see what comes up.

I would also add that the place where you have the most friends and know the most people would probably be the best place for you safety-wise!

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know, good luck!

That is so unfortunate to live under those terms, but if you love the place then the landlord can do all they want as long as you pay the rent they cannot ask you to move, they can however if you live in a private house but since you wrote she's not renewing I'm taking it as if this is a 6 fmaily or more if so then Jennifer she cannot do anything a matter a fact you can get a lawyer for grounds of harrassment and believe me she'll stay quiet. If you want I would do that just so she will leave you alone, don't let no one bully you get a lwayer and one letter from the lawyer will keep her quiet and under NY laws all leases that are in good standing as far as paying the rent gets renewed whether the landlord would like it or not under rent stabilization laws. Rent stabilized laws reqire landlords to renew you cannot and I repeat cannot ask someone to move just because they have someone staying with them. Wish you the best!!!! Jeannette Batsikas ... more
