Deborah - That is difficult without seeing the home, but mainly you wan't all the clutter gone and or debris gone. Also, you want all the fixtures to be in working order. If your home is already in good shape then you want to make sure the kitchen and baths are clean and spruced up as much as possible. Then you should take some attention to the front yard area and make sure you have good curb appeal. The cost could be from zero from only cleaning and some mantinance that you can do on the weekend to a costly remodel and major fixes. You can always sell it "as-is" and price it accordingly too.
