Well, because "safe" is such a relative term and one person might think the area is safe whereas another person may not, it's best for you to draw your own conclusions by using real crime data and other factors. One website you can go to is and at the top right hand side of the screen type in the property address to see what types of crimes have happened in the vicinity.

You could also talk to some of the neighbors if you catch them out and get their opinions, or drive around at different times of day and different days of the week to get a feel for the neighborhood overall.

Comparing Jan-April 2012 with Jan-April 2013 data, in the Hickory NC area, 2012 average sold price was approximately, $164,000. 2013 sold prices for the same period is approximately $156,000. That's about a 5% drop year to year.

That said, certain areas are seeing some massive gains in value overall, 20-30% increases year to year. A lot of it will depend on the specific area as well as the type of property.

Real Estate Agents are not allowed to comment on a variety of topics. The Fair Housing Act restricts the information that can be provided by a Real Estate Agent.

Off Limit Topics Include:
• Crime Statistic (including questions about whether a neighborhood is good or bad or safe)
• Demographics
• Environmental Concerns
• Household Income
• Religion
• Schools (including questions about how good or bad the school is)

Determining to the answers to questions on any of the topics listed above is something that you would need to do on your own. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. If a Real Estate Agent were to comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.
