Considering a house purchase in Dublin within Dougherty School Boundaries, will my daughter get in?

Asked by Alex_chow, Dublin, CA Wed May 13, 2009

We are looking to buy a house in Dublin (Tassajara Meadows) for the Dougherty school. However, if we buy and move right in time for the new school year (around July), what are the odds that our daughter will get to the school? That is the default school for the house we are looking at (based on the school boundaries) so we are hoping that she will get in. If not, what other schools should we be looking at? If we end up in any other school, will she be able to go back to Dougherty after 1 year? I apologize if this sounds pretty naive.

She is in K, and we are not used to juggling school districts around - currently we are not in Dublin Unified School District, and this is pretty important part of our homebuying decision. Any help and input is appreciated from Trulia community - thanks again everyone.

Also, the current proposal is to pull back the Dougherty boundary to Hacienda. That should reduce the waiting list for Kids in Tassajara Meadows IMHO.

I am proceeding with my home purchase.

Good morning Alex,

It is always prudent to contact the school district to confirm enrollment availability. You may contact the Dublin Unified School District at 925.828.2551. You may also want to check out their website at http://www.dublin.k12.ca.us/

Good luck with your home search!

Thanks Pks. Since my enrolment would be for the next year (Starting Aug 25th 2009) they said I'd need to register and go to Dougherty on day 1 of the school, and if at all they've to move kids around they'd tell me within a few weeks of school season.

I had called the school district (I just put an offer for a house in Emerald Glen). They said that my kid can go to Dougherty and they do not have any lottery overflow as of now.

You might want to call them to make sure that you have a definite answer.

I concur with Dania and Harpal. Please call the DUSD office for the definitive answer, but the fact that Kolb Elementary School's construction has been delayed means that even if you are on the right side of the boundary, your child may have to go across town if there is no room.

Well, I guess I'd rather not buy in Dublin then - what is the point to pay a 100k premium to buy in East Dublin when quite possibly my kid will end up in West Dublin Schools due to overflow and wonderful planning of the City (allowing thousands of homes to be built keeping the same schools).

I do not want to gamble with my kid's future - I am happy renting in Pleasanton. Thanks so much for your answers, and best of luck to people who are paying the property taxes only to see their kids end up in not-so-great schools 5-8 miles away.

I can try calling the school district but I doubt they will give an accurate answer, as they cannot. They'd wiggle their way out of the questions as they cannot be certain about anything, given the messed up planning with zero capacity/infrastructure impact analysis before building a gazzillion homes.
