For example, if you want a home built with concrete block vs wood, expensive wood floors and ceramic tile or medium grade carpet, granite counter tops or ??? ( top of the range gourmet chef kitchen with cherry wood cabinets and an island with running water, sink, etc. - tile roof or architectural shingles? Pool or no pool? Solar, gas, electric?
As you can see from just the beginning of my questions, all these will factor in to the price per sq. ft, and it will vary by production or non production builder. Get yourself a good, experienced agent and start doing some research, only then will you kmow what you need to know.

You may also search Google for the local builder association (i.e.: Miami Builder Association), for a list of possible resources if you'd like some very general/generic numbers.
However, you must consider all factors as Paula pointed out in the quality of materials, if the home will be Green, lot location, etc. The lot price will affect the overall cost to you, but it is separate of course, from your construction cost.
Perhaps you may also want to consider an existing property which may only require some remodeling, renovation or addition to make it your own. In today's market, distress property in great locations abound, and these may also represent an alternative for you to consider.
Just make sure you work with a professional Realtor who is also a Certified Distressed Property Expert so that you get the most bang for your buck.
