Being a Sparta resident I may be a little biased, however, Sparta truly is conveniently located for travel into the city. Whether via public transportation or driving in, there are many routes you can take. Lakeland Bus has a run from Main Street in Sparta to NYC and you can check out their schedule and arrival times at http://www.lakelandbus.com/Sched80MFE.html. NJ Transit runs a train line with Park & Rides nearby. You can see their schedules and locations at http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=Tri… The Mt. Arlington, Netcong or Dover Stations would be closest to Sparta. However, my favorite way in is 80 to the GWB to the Henry Hudson, cutting through Central Park gets me right where I want to be on the East side.

You can take the bus (Lakeland) from Sparta directly to Port Authority. During rush hour it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes, depending on how heavy traffic is. Another alternative is to drive to the park and ride in Parsippany at the intersection of Beveryck and Route 46. From Parsippany, it will take about 50 minutes to get into Port Authority. Go to Lakeland Bus Lines on the web and check out the schedule.

Many people drive down route 15 to Route 80 to Denville or Dover then take the train the rest of the way. If you prefer to drive. It would be route 15 to 80 then depending if you want Holland, Linclon or GWB you stay on 80 or take 280. There are also comuter buses that leave from Sparta that you can take to Dover(to train) or to Manhattan. You can check out http://www.njtransit.com for more train info.
