I have lived in Laguna Beach for about 15 years and raised my 3 kids here. The problem with living here is that it is hard to get my husband to go away on vacation. He says, this is where people come for vacation, why go somewhere else? As for the neighborhoods, each one has a flavor of its own; from cozy, funkier South Laguna to much fancier Emerald Bay, we have all types of areas and all types of people just like any town. The one thing we have in common is the amazing beach, great neighbors, and a love of our town. Yes, there are tons of opportunities to be involved, you are welcome to participate. In fact, once we know you are a worker...look out. We have opportunities to deliver Meals on Wheels, work in the canyon with the homeless kitties, work at the animal shelter, volunteer at the art museum, historical society, participate in organizations that help others or work in our churches among other things. I understand where you and your family are in the scheme of things. My youngest is 18 and it is a fun time to think about what you and your husband would like.
My office is directly across from the Montage Resort in Laguna.

You will love it! The main beach has a great boardwalk and I love to walk in the mornings with my coffee...really clears the mind.
I have a beach home search on my site at http://www.great-western-realty.com/Beach_MLS_Search.htm if you would like to do some searching of beach homes in that area...
Let me know if you need anything else!
I have lived in Laguna off and on for my entire life....it's great!! I just love it. You can walk to the beach and there are lots of little cafes and coffee spots. I really love the beach lifestyle. It is a friendly town and you will find yourself known in a very short time...the shop keepers do not turn over very fast, so as you walk around town, you will become known.
I also like San Clemente now that the down town area is being revamped. Meaning that they have more interesting shops and restaurants...but by all means, Laguna is my first choice.
If you are thinking of a move in a while....I'd be happy to send you a couple of listings in Laguna (and San Clemente if you like) for you to start becoming familiar with homes and pricing..then whenever you are ready...you'll be ahead of the game.
