Home Buying in Hanover>Question Details

Monica, Other/Just Looking in Hanover, PA

My parents and my family are looking to buy together, we are hoping to find something with in-law quarters,

Asked by Monica, Hanover, PA Mon Dec 29, 2008

where do we start? And are these homes very high in cost? We are hoping to be able to find a home that offers a big enough room for all of us to have meals and spend quality time together but also my parents & myself and hubby would like to have in-law quarters, as well! How do you go about looking for something like this?

Help the community by answering this question:

Might i suggest that you need to get some help from someone who not only knows the local real estate market, and will think 'outside the box' in finding a good property for you, but who has enough experience to know about what the local zoning impact is as well. (Lynn911's suggestion to consider a media room makeover falls in that category- too bad he's not local for you)
There are numerous zoning and deed restrictions that might keep you from using a single family home for extended family living in some neighborhoods. Contact one of the local answer'ers here, and see what they can tell you. Ask if they have any experience in dealing with local officials to get variances if needed. Experience counts for a lot there.

Best wishes as you search out your options.

Hello Monica,

This week there are several homes with in-law quarters listed in the York/Adams MLS. The price ranges that I saw today run from a modest home for just under $180000 to a fine home that is priced wll over a million dollars.

Do you need to be quite close to Hanover, or will you want to look at a fairly wide area? It would be helpful if you want to let me know what your approximate price range would be.

Please do let me know if you want to see specifics on some of the homes that are available that might work for you. I'll be happy to add your email address to the mailing of results in this search. I am finding that in these tougher times there is more demand for these homes, but in general they are fairly reasonable. A marvelous one just sold last month in York Central School district for less than $160,000. That was a silly low price! I imagine you will have to pay a bit more.

Feel free to email me at eileen@gatewayrealtyinc.com

So are you still looking? I have a home with listed that would fit the bill. There are many ways to approach this . The first one is to talk to a Buyers agent that can help you preview homes via the Internet and show you your possibilities. Second is to get out and look at a few homes in your price range. Third is weigh your options and move forward with a purchase
Have you been pre approved for a mortgage? Would you like some names and numbers of lenders?
I am more then happy to help you. And if you did not already know this a buyers agent works for you at no cost. The buyers agent is paid by the sellers agent at the settlement table.. So do not put off talking to an agent because of fears that it will be money out of your pocket. A good buyers agent can help you with all of your questions and get the listings to you and your family . please give ma a call ...Sharon Harris 717 465 0661. I will be delighted to sit down and talk with you and if we can work together great if not ok!

Hi Monica,
If you are still looking for a home with in-law quarters, I have one that is coming on the market in Northeastern Schools and close to Strinestown. It is a rancher with 3 bedrooms on the main floor and a walkout basement with a 3 bedrooms apartment. Each living area has 1800 sq. ft. of living space plus 2 garages, a pool and almost an acre of land with a beautiful country view. If that area isn't where you want to be, I can run a search for you and find you something in another area. I specialize in York and Adams counties and have been a top selling agent for several years. You can email me at: sharron.minnich@century21.com.
Thanks, Sharron Minnich

If you cannot find anything, you can always build onto the back of side of the home. I had family that did that and they were able to give their mother a very nice and spacipous apartment with kitchen, living room/dining room, bedroom and bathroom, without moving.

I would start by picking a realtor to help you through the process that is an expert in the desired neighborhoods you are interested in. You can then meet to go over your goals and to move foward in accomplishing them.

FYI I have several "blended families" who have converted large media room into a another master suite not much expensive involved. New construction is another option speak direct with builder.
