How much value does solar add to a home?

Solar companies claim that every $1000 of annual savings translates to $20,000 on the value of a house (e.g. http://grosolar.com/solar_faqs/#sell ). I'd like to hear what brokers think of this, especially in southern California. Thanks.

Jon, you asked a great question. It is really too early in the game to see how much of a return green features in a home will provide.

Personally, I would pay a bit more for a home with solar energy and some other green features as well...the market is yet to prove how much value these features will add.

no - it doesn't work like that. no magic number. once its part of the house, it is part of the house and a package deal. the value increases and decreases based on market conditions, age & maintenance of equipment and the buyers perceived value.
