You cannot send your child to a public school "for free" if you do not live within the district's borders. The people living and paying taxes within the borders are paying for the district's education budget.

As Realtors, we don't talk about schools, but we can talk about budgeting. There are many ways of looking at paying for education. Some people find that living in an area with a proportionately lower tax rate and paying for private/parochial education separately, saves them money in the long term, versus living in an area where the taxes are very high and sending them to public school "for free" for 13 years or less. Sometimes it costs less to pay for education only during the years your children are using the education, especially if you plan to stay in the home for a long period time. This concept depends, of course, on how many children you have, their ages and their needs. Some people find that it gives them the freedom to tailor your child's educational needs and not get stuck beholden to the programs offered "for free" within a higher taxed school district. The bottom line is that you are paying for it either way. A 2,500 sq/ft, 3 bedroom home in Westchester may be taxed anywhere from $8,000 - $45,000 annually depending on location. I know this was not your direct question but I think it's something to add to the conversation as buyers can very often be school district oriented even when the numbers don't work.

I graduated from Yonkers High 5 years ago and if the quality of teachers, course materials, etc is still about the same level then I can tell you it is an excellent school. Saunders is also a great school and offers a lot of programs for specific career paths that allow student hands-on experience in fields such as cooking, HVAC and carpentry.

You should definitely look at the websites linked from previous replies because they provide a lot of statistical information such as performance of both students and teachers.

Visit and/or call any school you're considering; I'm sure there are staff available to give you any information you may need to make an informed decision and to better answer your questions. Good luck!

Unfortunately, Realtors are not allowed to comment on schools and their quality. Type Schools Yonkers in your search toolbar for sites that rate schools.

Just keep in mind that if you stay in Yonkers, this district is un-zoned so living near a good school doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to get into that school. Check greatschools website because that will show you which schools are best in Yonkers. PEARLS is the best school they have. You may want to just find a neighborhood that you love. Colonial Heights, Westchester Hills, Crestwood are all great places. Good Luck! :) ... more

You'd probably have to get your benefits transferred, if possible. I really don't think Westchester County deals with the New York City Housing Authority.

I think you are going to have to email Trulia directly to try and get them to change the information. It is quite possible that they are simply displaying a data feed from so the error may actually be there. If that is the case you would have to contact them.

Good Luck!
