Kathy Burgreen answered:
I'm a former realtor and life long Yonkers area resident. The Lincoln Park area is OK but if you intend to live in Westchester, you will need to learn that your budget has to take priority over safety. Will you be renting or buying? Yonkers is cheaper than nearby towns and villages so you can get more for your money. On the flip side, the crime rate is higher in Yonkers than nearby towns and villages except for Mount Vernon. Because of the higher crime rate and low rated schools, this explains why housing is cheaper in Yonkers and Mount Vernon.

If you are on a limited budget, try New Rochelle first. Look at housing in 10801 and 10805. The crime rate is lower and the public schools are much better. Also instead of Lincoln Park, try north Yonkers (above Lake Ave.) The crime rate is lower at least.

If you can afford a higher budget, look in Mamaroneck, Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown, White Plains and Hartsdale.

Michael Levy answered:
Hi Drew,
Yonkers was just named the "hippest town" in the Hudson Valley by a poll held on lohud.com. The town has recently invested heavily in the arts, and as a result, there is a growing art community in Yonkers now. Please contact me know if you have any more questions.

It depends on the buyer of the home. A lot of buyers really like siding because it is energy efficient. Some people will only buy houses made of other materials. You should get started on repairs sooner rather than later so that you can start building equity. I'm surprised that house is still around though. http://www.centuryroofing.ca/siding.html ... more

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the authorities with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors.
