Hi Stacy,

The seller's agent actually does have the authority to ask for proof of funds before you viewing a property. This is a most common practice among the high end properties. It is a little unorthedox for agents to ask for it when the home is of average or less expensive value but still allowed. You should be cautious, because there are a lot of scammers out there on the internet, and there are also a lot of forced first time landlords who wanted to sell their home, but can9;t because they owe more than it's worth, so they try renting.

Never mail a check to someone for the security deposit or 1st months rent unless you have at least met the person at the property.

Last, work with a Realtor. There are agents who specialize in helping tenants find a place, just be sure to ask
