I'm a former realtor in Westchester County, NY and lived here all my life so I'm very knowledgeable with West Point.

1. You will need a very wide search area. On the west side of the Hudson River (Rt. 9W - Rt. 202), look between Haverstraw to the south and Newburgh to the north. On the east side, look between Peekskill to the south and Beacon to the north. You need a wide search area because most landlords refuse pets or they have restrictions on weight or breeds. You can offer to pay pet liability insurance (expensive) and get your pets a good breed certificate to appease landlords.

2. As for activities, there is plenty to do here. Hiking, boating, fishing, theater and yes you can find swim teams & music lessons. As for gyms, West Point has their own but truthfully, why do you need a gym when you have gorgeous hikes & trails outside your front door? The area is that pretty. OK it doesn't have Hawaii's gorgeous beaches but still...

3. Downtown Newburgh has some crime issues (because it's on the low income side) but outside downtown Newburgh it's fairly safe. Same with Peekskill.

4. You will need a car (or 2). There is busses, but the area is on the rural/suburban side so getting from Point A to Point B requires a car if you need efficiency and convenience especially with children.

5. NY is expensive. Even though you're a distance from New York City, don't expect anything to be cheap. NY has the highest property taxes in the U.S. and rents are high. Sales tax is 4% for the state but local counties & cities add their own sales tax.

Hope this helps.

Hi Neicey,

I am sorry you are not having luck locating a realtor. Are there local real estate offices in your area? If so, I would walk in. Someone will help you there.

Best of luck to you.

Hello, have you moved into Highland Falls yet? I reside in HF and it is a wholesome, cozy community of about 4K population. Safe and ez commute to WP, NYC via train lines or parkway, and great for the outdoors person w/much to do, as well as, enjoy culture, sports and history nearby. I have a spacious two bedroom rental listing which does accept a pet, includes all utilities but electric (heat is included). Walk to West Point. Please advise if I can schedule an appointment for you, if you are still seeking. Maureen, Cell: 203-434-0427. ... more
