I dont want to come off as rude but if you do not know this basic information, why are you buying the biggest purchase of your life without an agent/professional? A realtor for you costs you NOTHING and seller pays 6% (3% to each agent). You are doing yourself a disservice not having an agent. You should now at least think of retaining a real estate attorney to help guide you and protect your interests. There is so much involved with buying a house you need someone to keep you on course and make sure you are not being taken advantage of.

The first thing that comes to mind is to talk to Habitat for Humanity. Their specialty is helping low-income people obtain ownership.

Aside from that, you'll really want to reach out to local lenders and agents to find out what other offers are available for your market. I'd encourage you to ask them questions about the cost of owning a home. There are a lot more expenses on your back (like repairs) that renters normally don't incur. You'll really want to give some thought to how you'll handle those unexpected expenses. ... more

as appealing as building your own house may sound, it can be a huge headache as you have to depend on many people including architects and contractors plus you have to deal with city permits and such. There are many houses out there that may fit your needs just as well. Either way I would be glad to help you find either a house or a lot to build your future home. ... more

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods.
