Sorry to hear you were not able to work things out with your lender prior to the sale and I am surprised that you were not able to use that information to avoid the sheriff sale. Yes I would be prepared to use this information to fight a deficiency judgment keep an eye out for the filing and get an attorney if the lender pursues the deficiency, but you may be happy to hear many lenders are not pursuing them.
