The Hanley Team answered:
Hi Grant -

The only way I know is to flag the listing as fraudulent and let them know why when you do so. TRULIA and ZILLOW are both pretty good about pulling listings that are fraudulent. Unfortunately there isn't any way to keep the crooks, scammers and thieves out. all they need is a computer, and internet access to re-load another one.

If someone says they are LOCAL - in Ventura County - then you can try the REFAT group (Real Estate Fraud Advisory Team) the District Attorney's office. They are on the internet at

The safest way to search is to check with one or several reputable property managers.

If you would like a recommendation, let me know via a reply email.

Good luck and stay safe -

Understand that ANYONE can post a rental. Trulia is only displaying 3rd party info, and there are ways for scammers to post fake listings on other websites which then get mirrored on trulia, zillow, realtor, etx.. When a deal seems too good to be true, it is.. ALWAYS verify EVERYTHING you see online with a local Realtor. Realtors adhere to a strict code of ethics which offers you consumer protection and piece of mind. Flag the listings and email Browse the agent directory to find a well reviewed local Realtor. ... more

You will find the most rental listings on Craig's' List online. Most landlords want a longer term lease but there are some who will do shorter. Also, check online for vacation home rentals which is a great source for shorter term stays. You will find houses, condos, guest houses and guest quarters to choose from.
Glad to be of help,

It would depend on the landlords' preference and inclination. It's definitely plausible though.

Here are 10 options to consider to reach your goal:

Option 1: Call from work or land-line, etc.
Option 2: Email the party responsible for the listing.
Option 3: Send a text message and ask about pets.
Option 4: Send a PM thru a social media site, such as FaceBook, LinkedIn, etc.
Option 5: Drive by the property to see if there are any flyers and to access the neighborhood.
Option 6: Ask a real estate agent to run a search for all rentals that accept pets.
Option 7: Walk into a local real estate office and ask for a printout
Option 8: Look in the Kitty Letter, VC Star, etc for rentals that accept pets.
Option 9: Check Craigslist, etc for even more selection
Option 10: (Best) Extend your cell plan program and Call to confirm each rental to save precious time.
I hope this helps!

Ponderosa Village has 91 total units with 90 assisted living units. The property is intended for the Family (S8NC) housing program. Last inspected on 01/04/2010, Ponderosa Village earned a Housing Quality Standards score of 80 out of 100, which means the living conditions of the property are well below average. A score of 86 or above is considered healthy and safe by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and any property that scores below an 86 should be avoided... The rent estimate for a 1 bedroom unit at Ponderosa Village is $1,096. Ponderosa Village estimated rent is approximately -2% less than the average fair market rent in the Camarillo local area.
This means you will not expect to pay any more than 30% of your adjusted gross income under a typical Section 8 program.
Ponderosa Village has a Value Rating of 3 out of 5 when compared to all section 8 housing programs that have been recently inspected by HUD. The value rating measures each property's value by comparing the latest HUD inspection score and the cost of the house or apartment. A five-star rating signifies a high HUD inspection score relative to the cost of the unit

Call on all the NEWEST apartment buildings, and look for wheel-chair accessible apartments for rent. Forget about a 'hit-or-miss' condo and/or townhouse, unless you want to hire an agent and pay them a 'finder's fee' for hours of time spent searching for the right dwelling match. There may be an apartment guide (publication) at your local supermarket or check the Yellow Pages (if they are still in business). ... more

Barry Shapiro answered:
A Security Deposit equivalent to 3.5% down on an FHA loan would allow you to fire your landlord and own your own home, at today's interest rates! Actually, 3.5% of a $600K purchase price would be $21,000 which is far less than the possible hefty pet deposit a landlord might impose. Your house payment may be somewhat higher but your two dogs will love you for it! You'll be able to deduct the interest payments, too!

Other than that option, you are must abide by the whim and rules of the landlord. There may be alternative properties in your price range that are 'pet friendly'... Good luck!

Landlords are pretty sympathetic in this economy. With a letter of explanation and some good references you should be okay. It may not be easy to find something quick. Just keep trying.
