You can buy any home in the Bronx or NYC and remodel or renovate it after you get the keys. HOWEVER, the key issue is your budget. Are you a NYC licensed contractor? Will you need to hire a licensed contractor? Contractors in our area are very expensive, so the question is do you have the money to buy a home + pay for renovations?

As a retired realtor, I have shown many homes to buyers in the Bronx and there are many homes that do need upgrades / remodeling. Unfortunately not all owners have the budget to pay for a contractor + the price of homes is expensive to begin with. We live in a very expensive housing market, so the buyer that can afford a home in the Bronx + the budget to pay for a contractor WILL skip the Bronx and look for homes in Westchester County (Yonkers, New Rochelle, etc.). Westchester's housing has more square footage for the same price as the Bronx and it's already renovated in most cases.

Are you pre approved yet by a lender or will you be paying cash? What type of house are you looking for - single family or two family?

Have you checked out the "rent" section at the top of Trulia? There may be something in there. Otherwise you could also check Craigslist.com to see what they have for posted for rentals. ... more

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

You can contact the listing agent who will be able to help you learn more about that specific property (and probably will know a lot about similar properties in the area). To find an agent, just click on the yellow button on the property's Trulia listing and you will be able to start a dialogue.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can help with anything else. I am happy to be a resource for you. Good luck with the search!

Best,
Ali, Trulia Voices Community Manager

Adam,

Interview a few Realtors in your local market. Pricing is key and location too! If you have had the home for several years get an appraisal done before you put the house on the market. Ask for a free consultation a professional Realtor would give you a Free Market Analysis and give you some constructive feedback on how to even stage your home for when you put it on the market. Homes are Selling and I see more and more motivated Buyers.

Best of Luck,
