Your question is "Is New York Safe?" and the property you cited is on the Upper East Side.
There is crime in every corner of the world that I know of. That said, on your more general question, New York City today is not the NYC of the 1970s and 1980s and the tourists everywhere are a testament to that. When our former mayor, Ed Koch, died recently and they had tv specials about his life, I could barely recognize the grimy NYC depcited during the time he served compared to the beautiful and inviting green cultural diverse mecca it is today. As for specific neighborhoods, I would advise you check the local precincts for crime stats.

I'll add my voice to the choir as I am New York born and bred. This is an amazing city that is full of diversity and culture. We have the finest in performing arts, World class restaurants, a wonderful walkability, Central Park and a ton of things to see and do like, shopping at Macy's, Bloomingdales or checking out Coney Island on the weekend. All this and we have been called (among other things, lol) one of the safest big cities in America. Perhaps Mayor Bloomberg said that. But I digress. Yes, our city has gone through changes, but it was all for the better. If you are looking to move here, come on Abby. We're waiting for you to make your mark! All the best.

Abby is any where in this world safe? Yes there are some areas of New York that might not be as safe as others but that's in any state or any country. Check the police department to see less crime rates in different areas but if you are looking to buy in New York you should contact a realtor who can tell you which neighborhoods are considered safer and in which borough.

As advised in the past, you may check police department and other government agencies to check the records of crime and safety to determine whether New York City is safe.

You can visit http://www.HomeFair.com and click on the city reports section for in-depth crime stats and area demographics. They have a great side by side zip code comparison feature as well. Other options would be http://www.SpotCrime.com and http://www.CrimeReports.com
